The Next Right Step: From Teaching to EdTech

November 2021

Synopsis

Of all the books about career change, this one was written especially for teachers.

Educational technology (or EdTech) is transforming K-12 education, and teachers seeking a career change are taking notice. Today, more teachers than ever are considering a move from the classroom to a career in EdTech, educational publishing, or another sector in the corporate world. Despite their qualifications and experience, however, many aren’t sure where to begin.

As Eva Brown successfully moved from classroom teaching to the corporate world—first to large educational publishers and then to a rising EdTech startup—she charted her own course. Since then, she has advised many other teachers on their own career paths. In The Next Right Step: From Teaching to EdTech, she offers the lessons of her experience to help you navigate your own career transition. Along the way, she answers such questions as:

  • What are the pros and cons of working in the corporate world?
  • What positions should I consider?
  • How will my classroom experience translate to the corporate world?
  • How can I grow professionally (and build my resume) right where I am?
  • How should I prepare for the interview?

Eva Brown’s years of experience, practical advice, and relatable style make this book the ultimate guide for any educator seeking to break into the corporate world. You can do it!

TESTIMONIALS

When I decided to leave teaching, I set my sights on EdTech. That’s what I knew, so that would be an easy transition, right? Well, I applied to dozens of jobs every week and rarely heard anything back; I felt completely defeated more than once and almost gave up.

But along the journey, Eva Brown was there to provide insight and encouragement about how to get where I wanted to be. I took a ton of notes in our meeting and used her advice moving forward, feeling so much more hopeful that there was something for me. I didn’t end up in EdTech, but I found an amazing instructional design position that I love! I’m so thankful for Eva (and others) who helped me figure out what my next steps needed to be, and I think this book is going to be essential for many more as they transition from the classroom to whatever is right for them.

Eva’s book is what every teacher who has thought “the grass is greener on the other side” (aka the business world) needs to read. Eva’s insights from being a teacher are so refreshing to read. Many times while reading I found myself thinking “Yes! That’s exactly what I thought the business world was like. You mean it’s not?!”.

No where else have I found advice from someone in the business world (Edtech specifically) that is from a teachers perspective. Eva gets us! She has been a teacher, she knows our struggles, our questions, our uncertainty first hand and addresses them all.

Is leaving the classroom the right thing for you? Eva’s book can’t answer that for you but what it did do for me is give me the information to see the similarities and the differences between an educator and being in the business world.

I cannot for the life of me remember where I first heard about this book. The author, Eva Brown, packs this book full of useful information for us wanting to make a career change with a focus on EdTech.

She dives into some of our options as teachers wanting to move into the corporate world, such as:
👉🏼Customer Success Manager
👉🏼Implementation Specialist
👉🏼Consultant
👉🏼Content Writer
👉🏼Instructional Designer
👉🏼Corporate Trainer
👉🏼Sales

It is a honest book that does a beautiful job not being “pushy” one way or another (staying in the classroom or leaving). She gives pros and cons that are helping me narrow down my options for what I want to do next.

She also includes reflection questions at the end of the chapters AND possible interview questions at the end of the book!
